Values we build by

Safer by choice
We actively choose to prioritise safety in every task, on every site, every day. Our crews stop and think, speak up, and protect each other. Meanwhile, leaders set the standard by resourcing safety properly and owning risk decisions.
Own the outcome
We deliver on time, on quality, and on our word. That means taking initiative, solving problems, and finishing strong. At every turn, our team provides clarity, removes roadblocks, and holds accountability.
Better every day
We learn fast, share knowledge and keep improving how we work. Our people question how things are done and look for better ways, supported by leaders who coach consistently, encourage transparency, and recognise progress.
One Stripes, one team
We work as one across divisions, projects, and regions. Collaboration starts early, communication stays open, and support goes both ways. Leaders break silos and prioritise team success over individual wins.
Community at heart
We back regional Australia, where we live, work and raise our families. Every decision we make respects locals, champions regional capability, and aims to leave a positive legacy through strong community partnerships.

Early Years

1971

It all started in a small tin shed in Gunnedah, NSW. Founded by Harold Hockings, Gunnedah Industries manufactured grain screens and separators for local farmers. The business gained traction fast, soon supporting agricultural operations across regional New South Wales and southern Queensland.

2000s

Harold’s son-in-law, Jamie Chaffey, joined the business and helped steer it in a fresh direction. While continuing to serve the agricultural sector, Gunnedah Industries expanded into manufacturing waste oil collection bins — broadening its reach and reinforcing its reputation as a modern regional manufacturer.

2006

Recognising opportunity in the local mining boom, Jamie founded Stripes Engineering to deliver steel fabrication, mechanical installation, & site construction services. Distinct from Gunnedah Industries’ agricultural roots, this new operation quickly became a trusted partner to mining & industrial clients.

2007

To support the company’s rapidly growing engineering arm and gain more control over its supply chain, Jamie founded Stripes Industrial Supplies. Solidifying Stripes’ position as an industry leader, this store equips local trades and contractors with PPE, tools, consumables, and workwear.

Early 2010s-Late 2010s

2010–2017

Stripes Engineering continued to surge ahead throughout the next decade, securing significant mining and industrial contracts nationwide. What began as a small local contractor evolved into a regional force renowned for delivering industrial construction and maintenance projects safely and efficiently.

2018

As each division grew larger and larger, Jamie unified them altogether under the Stripes Group banner. By then, three of his children had joined the company — the third generation in a family legacy defined by quality, reliability, and commitment to regional excellence.
