Prominent Hill Paste Plant

Project Overview

Situated roughly 130 km south-east of Coober Pedy and 650 km north-west of Adelaide, OZ Minerals’ Prominent Hill Mine produces high-grade copper concentrate. Today, the on-site paste plant cyclones a portion of copper-gold tailings to create a consistent paste feed, before filtering and repulping the material with cement for underground backfill.

Our Work

In 2019–2020, Stripes Engineering Services was contracted by Outotec (now Metso:Outotec) to complete the construction of Prominent Hill’s paste backfill plant. Stripes successfully managed and executed the full scope of works, including detailed earthworks, concrete, structural, mechanical, piping and electrical installations.

The paste plant construction included 900 m³ of concrete and 70 tonnes of reinforcement for civil works, erection and cladding of the belt filter building, installation of multiple conveyors and a radial stacker, a paste mixer, numerous pumps, generators and tanks, an electrical switch room and control room, all electrical, instrumentation and control systems, HDPE piping, and commissioning support.
